June greetings to you all,
The weather is warm, things are opening back up, we are getting out in community again, and more and more people are being vaccinated against COVID-19. With this renewed sense of optimism also comes the call to stay active and vocal in our stateās legislative process. There are several bills pending, and of course, a state budget to approve. Stay informed and let your voices be heard to protect and advance the services for individuals with I/DD in California. I have had multiple conversations with our state and federal elected representatives over the past few months. We have many great allies who are embracing the spirit and intention of the Lanterman Act. I am encouraged by what I am hearing in Sacramento.
It is my wish for all of you, that this time of summer warmth and renewal will be filled with new and re-established relationships, community involvement, the pursuit of happiness, and focused advocacy. May each of us seek to serve each another, building a community characterized by inclusion and empowerment.
As the renowned author, Maya Angelou, so perfectly put it, āYou may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.ā We believe an empowering community of empathy and respect is a true community where all its members can contribute.
Thank you for being an important part of our community, and for believing as JNCS does, that the wholeness of our community comes from ALL its members having the opportunity to contribute.
